If you knew Edward Tre' Stanton Johnson lll, you knew a man devoted to living life to the fullest. Whether it was riding sport bikes with his wife Irene, being the ultimate Dad with clipboard in hand to keep stats on Chloe, EJ, Ezon and Eden on whatever field their sports demanded; or watching movies in the theater room, Tre' squeezed every ounce of joy from life's littlest moments.
Tre's passions included reading, history and finding new places to explore. Art was a special part of his life, and he loved drawing self-portraits just as much as collecting African Art. If a four-legged bulldog ever crossed his path, beware, he just might bring him home to stay. Music was the heartbeat of Tre's life, and playlists he created -- especially on Apple Music -- will continue to echo throughout time, cherished and replayed by his children for years to come.
Tre' was born in New York City on August 30, 1971, to Saundra Greene-Johnson and Edward Stanton Johnson, Jr. He was an on child who excelled in academics and athletics from a very young age. Tre' attended Peekskill High School where he starred in football and distinguished himself in track and field events, competing in shotput, javelin, discus and hammer. His achievements earned him All-League, All-County and All-Section Honors. Tre' was deeply honored to have his Red Devil football jersey retired in 2013, a lasting tribute to his talent, leadership, and impact on the program.
At Temple University, Tre' continued to shine as a standout football player. He was a Lombardi Award Finalist, earned Third Team All-American Honors and was selected to participate in the 1993 Senior Bowl. Tre's college legacy was cemented when he was inducted into the Temple Athletic Hall of Fame in 2004.
While excelling on the field, he also honored the commitment of his full athletic scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Administration and in 1994, a master's degree in social work at Temple University.
Tre's professional football career began immediately when he was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft as an offensive guard by the Washington Redskins. During his tenure with Washington (1994-2000), he became known for his durability, strength and intelligence on the offensive line.
A career highlight came in 1999 when he earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. He played the 2001 season with the Cleveland Browns before returning to Washington to conclude his NFL career in 2002. Across eight seasons in the league, Tre' was respected not only for his physical prowess but for his deep knowledge of the game and his pride in playing it in the right way.
Following his retirement from professional football, Tre' discovered a second calling in education. For two decades he served as a history teacher at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland where colleagues say he was a gentle giant, a good mentor, with an unmistakable presence. He was beloved by the young male students he mentored. His Landon colleagues described him as "a man of great intellect and curiosity; a person of forthrightness, honesty and moral courage; and a teacher who cared very deeply about his students and matters of justice."
Throughout his years teaching, Tre' never left the gridiron. He was a resident on local TV, radio and podcast's throughout the DMV to critically analyze all things football, while reminiscing about his football legacy.
Tre' passed away on February 15, 2026, on a trip to see his children excel in Lacrosse.
Tre' is survived by his wife Irene, children Chloe, (25), EJ (19), Ezon (17), and Eden (15). He leaves behind his lifelong best friend, Charles "Tank" Harris, a brother in heart and spirit, who's unwavering bond and shared journey meant everything to him. There is a host of beloved cousins, whose lives were brightened by his love, laughter, and enduring presence, countless Washington football family members and those he touched during his teaching career.
A true testament to Tre's impact has been the outpouring of unwavering support that continues to embrace his family.
